Kotobukiya Bishoujo Spider-Woman

When Kotobukiya showed off the unpainted Bishoujo Spider-Woman statue sculpt at New York Comic Con 2013 one month ago, we knew it wasn’t going to be long until we saw the official painted photos of the piece and the opening of pre-orders.

Sure enough, over the weekend Kotobukiya released glamor shots of the statue, and the 2014 Kotobukiya Spider-Woman Bishoujo

How to Display Your Collection

How to Display Your Sports Action Figures, No Matter What You Collect

A display of sports action figuresOne of the biggest questions you will face as you collect sports action figures is how to display them.

Are you an "opener" or do you keep your figures in their packages? Do you want to organize them by team, by player, by series? Will you show off your figures as part of a larger display with other sports collectibles, or do you show them off by themselves?A display of sports action figures

Some guys may find this a simple matter. They collect just a certain player or team. Organizing those is pretty easy.

It hasn't been an easy decision for me. I collect figures I like, without regard to the player or team. So how the hell am I supposed to organize that? My family finds me standing in front of my collection about once a month, staring at it and trying to come up with a way to present it in a way that makes more sense. If I put them by team, I have to reorganize the collection every time a new series comes out. By player? The same problem, although not nearly as significant. And most of the players have only one or two figures . . . how do I organize those? I could group them by series, but that looks random. I'd have different Brett Favre figures scattered throughout the collection, which makes little sense.

Obviously, there is no single right way to organize your collection. You set it the way you want and enjoy it. But I wanted to present some ideas here to give you a variety of approaches to consider.

Some members of the spawn.com discussion board have incredible collections, and several of them have graciously consented to provide photos for display here. As you look through these collections, notice how people display unopened versus opened figures, how they keep the figures separate from other collectibles or mix them all together, how they use different shelving or mounting options.

Bringing photo-realism to sports figures and action figures

McFarlane Toys is the fifth largest action figure manufacturer in the United States. Established in 1994 to manufacture and sell action figures based on founder Todd McFarlane's comic book character Spawn, the international award-winning company has expanded into licensed products to become one of the premiere action figure producers on the planet.

Spawn is still the bedrock of the company -- McFarlane Toys released the 30th line of Spawn figures in 2006. Marquee toy lines include: Alien vs. Predator, Napoleon Dynamite (Twentieth Century Fox), Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, (Warner Bros.), Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Shrek (Dreamworks), and Lost (ABC Television).

McFarlane Toys also has its own line of proprietary figures including: McFarlane's Monsters, McFarlane's Military and McFarlane's Dragons. The newest venture, Pop Culture Masterworks includes 3D album covers and movie posters (Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Metallica, and Jimi Hendrix, Jaws, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Rocky Horror Picture Show), McFarlane's Music figures (Motley Crüe, Slash, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Bon Jovi and KISS). The latest licenses include the Hanna-Barbera cartoon library (Warner Bros) and The Simpsons (Fox).

Hartland of Ohio LLC Sports Action Figures

The First Sports Figures

Do you like McFarlane Sports Picks, Upper Deck figures, Starting Lineups or any of the thousands of figures that have been sold over the years? If so - thank Hartland. As far as I know, Hartlands were the first licensed sports figures ever produced, and they have set the standards for sports figures ever since.

That is one way to view Hartland - the other way is, the history of Hartland sports action figures is about as strange as you can get.

The first Hartland sports figures were produced in 1958 by Hartland Plastics of Hartland, Wisconsin, a company that had previously made plastic cowboy figures (Not Dallas Cowboys - the real kind, on horseback). These 8" baseball figures were sold at sports venue concession stands and featured Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth. Shortly thereafter Hartland Plastics created NFL figures of Johnny Unitas, Jon Arnett and generic linemen and running backs for each of the 14 teams in the NFL. In 1960 the company expanded their line with ten more MLB players, as well as a generic Bat Boy and Minor League player. The figures were issued with a tag, a circular cardboard piece that attached to the figures with a string. In 1962, Hartland a generic running back and lineman for the LSU Tigers to commemorate their 1959 NCAA Championship. In 1963 the company was bought out by Revlon Cosmetics Company and the sports figures were abruptly discontinued.

Sports Figures

A Variety of Figures for Sports Collectors to Choose From

Sports action figures have been around for many years - as far back as the 1980s Hartland Plastics issued figures of baseball greats like Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra.

From 1987 to 2001 Starting Lineup figures from Kenner/Hasbro were the most widely produced and collected figures in the hobby. In 2001 McFarlane Toys released Hockey and Football figures, following with figures from all four major sports in 2002. Since then McFarlane Sports Picks have been the top choice for sports action figure collectors.

Over that time several other lines of sports figures have been released: Pro Specialties' Gladiators of the Gridiron, Gracelyn Re-plays, GameBreakers by Upper Deck, and Headliners to name a few. Hartland issued more figures in the 1990s and early 2000s as well. In 2006 Upper Deck issued the first of their All-Star Vinyl figures and initial releases have been extremely well received.

Black Widow Exclusive Edition Premium Format Figure

Premium Format Black Widow Exclusive Edition with Switch out Knife Hand

Kicking off 2014 in style, Sideshow Collectibles will be releasing their second Premium Format Natasha Romanova (Romanoff) Black Widow statue in February 2014! I was hoping that since the Black Widow is a thinner statue than some of the more recent Marvel Premium Format Figures Sideshow has released, we might see a lower price-point of $250-$300 return. That is unfortunately not in the cards–the new comic Black Widow Premium Format statue carries a $359.99 retail price.

Sideshow Captain America Premium Format Figure

Captain America Premium Format Figure Statue 2014 Sideshow Collectibles

It’s been a little while since Sideshow Collectibles has produced a new Captain America statue, but with the new “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” movie coming to theaters in early 2014, the time has arrived for an all-new Premium Format Captain America. Easily the most detailed and visually impressive statue of the character that Sideshow Collectibles has ever developed,
Captain America is one of Marvel’s biggest icons, so it’s no surprise that this latest Captain America Premium Format Figure isn’t Sideshow’s first, second, or even third dance with the character. That said, I’ve never been all that impressed with Sideshow’s past attempts at Captain America. They’ve been “nice enough”, but certainly not in the upper-echelon of the kinds of statues that we all know that Sideshow Collectibles is capable of producing.
