McFarlane Military Action Figures - Commemorating America's Finest

McFarlane Military Action Figures - Commemorating America's Finest
McFarlane Military action figure

In 2005 McFarlane debuted their new Military line of action figures. Like the Sports Picks McFarlane Military figures are extremely realistic recreations of servicemen and women from all five branches of America's services. These figures are not licensed per se - the Pentagon does not license or approve commercial products - and as such they can not include details like unit patches or other DoD insignias. In spite of this limitation, the realism, from the patterns of material in the uniforms to the design and selection of weapons for each figure, is remarkable.

Currently, only modern soldier or sailors are featured in the Military line. The company has not excluded the possibility of issuing American and Allied military figures from World War II in upcoming releases.

Mattel Sports Toys
Grant Hill Ultra Jams action figure from Mattel

Grant Hill Ultra Jams action figure from MattelMattel has released various licensed sports products over the years. The largest product line would probably be the NBA Jams, 3" figures that were released in 1998 and 1999. In 1999 larger, 7" figures, were released as NBA Ultra Jams. The hallmark of these figures is oversized heads, similar to the Corinthian Headliners.

Two other those lines included a Wayne Gretzky doll with additional outfits and the NBA Court Collection. There are probably more and as I find them I'll add them to the database. For now, look below to see the known sports figure products from Mattel

The following list is almost certainly not all-inclusive, although I believe I have all of the Air Maximum figures that were released:

Sports Figures

A Variety of Figures for Sports Collectors to Choose From
Jerome Bettis Sports Pick figure from McFarlane Toys - amazing detail for a 6-inch figure

Jerome Bettis Sports Pick figure from McFarlane Toys - amazing detail for a 6-inch figureSports action figures have been around for many years - as far back as the 1980s Hartland Plastics issued figures of baseball greats like Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra.

From 1987 to 2001 Starting Lineup figures from Kenner/Hasbro were the most widely produced and collected figures in the hobby. In 2001 McFarlane Toys released Hockey and Football figures, following with figures from all four major sports in 2002. Since then McFarlane Sports Picks have been the top choice for sports action figure collectors.

Over that time several other lines of sports figures have been released: Pro Specialties' Gladiators of the Gridiron, Gracelyn Re-plays, GameBreakers by Upper Deck, and Headliners to name a few. Hartland issued more figures in the 1990s and early 2000s as well. In 2006 Upper Deck issued the first of their All-Star Vinyl figures and initial releases have been extremely well received.
Sports Action Figure.com currently has McFarlane Sports Picks, Gracelyn Re-plays, Pro Specialties' Gladiators of the Gridiron, Hartland Plastics, Mattel, MEZCO, Playmates and Upper Deck All-Star Vinyls in its database. As I obtain information about other brands I will add them to this site. If you have checklists or information about other brands of sports action figures, please use the contact form and let me know.
